These last 4 bulls are black, but carry a red gene. (Red Carrier)
These bull calves have received no creep feed at any time during the summer months, only mamma's milk and grass. We feel this allows the commercial cow/calf producer to use the summer gains on milk and grass, reflected in their weaning weights as a guide in sire selection for their own program.
Our high forage silage-hay ration has been designed by John Montgomery and Kevin Wadham of JM Consulting. The protein supplement and mineral package designed for growing bulls is added to the TMR mix daily. The rations were designed for a rate of gain of approximately 2.75 pounds per day, with longevity being the main focus. Calves were weaned in late Oct. and started on a Silage/Hay TMR with no grain added.
Start of test- Dec 1: Whole oats were added to the mix. Jan 1: Changed to 50 % whole oats 50 % ground barley. Feb 6: 100 % ground barley in the TMR mix. Late March: The bulls will be slowly switched over to a grass hay based ration to prepare their rumen for a hay or pasture diet.
At no time has the grain portion of the bull ration gone above 1% of their body weight. The 100% ground barley ration used in the latter part of the test stays well below 1% and is fed a maximum of 60 days. The 2.75 lb/day target rate of gain ensures adequate performance on test but does not compromise the feet or future longevity of these bulls. It is of the utmost importance to us that the bulls you purchase will stand the test of time!
Spring: BoviGold, Ultrabac 8 way Fall: BoviGold Booster, Ultrabac 7, OneShot, IvermectinFeb 08: IvermectinMarch 08: FootRot Vaccine with booster before delivery.
